About the Presenter:
Mr. Alistair James is a Senior Project Manager and Geotechnical Engin
eer with 27 years of experience in Europe and North America. Mr. James has
been the lead designer\, construction advisor and manager for a diverse r
ange of civil engineering developments in oil sands\, rail\, highways\, fo
undations and offshore in the private and public sector projects. This exp
erience includes the design and construction of deep foundations\, anchors
\, trawl and impact protection measures\, pipeline stability analysis\, un
bound gravel roads\, cut off walls\, directional drilling\, stabilization
of slopes (including hard engineering and integrated bioengineered solutio
ns) and underground mine workings\, tunnels\, and ground investigations. H
e has also become involved in developing relationships with First Nations
to enable engineering and science opportunities for young people and commu
nities.

Abstract: A well e
ngineered site investigation:
This presentation describes common issues that occur with in
adequate or poorly planned engineered site investigations. The issues are
illustrated with statistics from various UK government departments but are
relevant to today and North American practice\, just as they were in the
UK when collected. The presentation goes on to present examples of poor pr
actice from the presenter’\;s personal experience and also from the e
xperience of others in Europe and North America. The presentation provides
general advice and guidance from published sources and his own experience
that may hopefully allow us to learn from the experiences of others and n
ot repeat them.
